Closest alternatives

At a glance

The card in three decisions.

The Platinum Card® from Amex (commonly called the Amex Platinum) is the issuer's flagship personal card. Its strongest differentiators are the Global Lounge Collection—which spans Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass and Delta Sky Clubs with an eligible Delta flight—and over $3,500 in advertised annual credits. The $895 annual fee makes it one of the most expensive widely held consumer cards.

The credit structure earns a 5/5 Coupon Book score because the dollar total is exceptionally high, even though each credit imposes its own merchant, enrollment, cadence or booking-channel constraint. The card earns a 3/5 Keeper Card score because the value proposition depends heavily on using enough credits to offset the fee—without changing normal spending behavior—and the everyday earning rate is a flat 1X outside of travel.

Best fit

Frequent travelers who value lounges and can use multiple credits naturally

Especially relevant when airport lounge access, hotel elite status and the airline-fee credit already match existing travel patterns.

Current timing

175K matches the tracked maximum—but it may not be the offer you get

Amex determines your specific offer when you apply, using criteria it does not publicly disclose.

Main watchout

An $895 fee must be justified with actual credit use

$3,500+ in credits sounds appealing, but each credit has its own merchant, enrollment, cadence or booking-channel constraint.

Current & historical offer

175K is the advertised maximum; your actual offer may differ.

We compare public points offers with public points offers. Amex's "apply and find out" model means the displayed 175K figure is a ceiling, not a guarantee.

Standard offer 80,000 points
Baseline Frequently observed public level in independent tracking. Often paired with a lower spend requirement.
Occasional elevated offer 125,000 points
Elevated Appears periodically above the standard public offer; tracked with varying spend requirements.
Tracked maximum offer 175,000 points
Current advertised maximum · exact match Green outline marks where today's advertised offer fits. Your actual offer is determined during application.

Timing assessment

The 175K ceiling is historically strong—but it is not fixed.

175K is 95,000 points above the tracked 80K standard, a 118.8% increase. However, the "apply and find out" model means you may receive a lower offer during the application, and the $12,000 spend requirement over six months is substantial.

Why someone may still apply

A premium travel card can make sense even with an uncertain bonus.

Apply only if the $12,000 spend is ordinary planned spending over six months, the $895 fee makes sense after netting out credits you already use, and Amex's once-per-lifetime language does not rule you out.

Card benefits

Lounges and credits dominate; earning is a supporting feature.

The tiers are a Points Brief editorial assessment of decision importance and rarity among premium personal travel cards—not labels supplied by Amex.

Tier 1 · Rare differentiators

Benefits whose scope or exclusivity can materially change the premium-card decision.

1,400+

Global Lounge Collection

The largest airport lounge network among U.S.-issued premium cards, spanning Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass Select and Delta Sky Clubs when flying Delta.

  • Centurion Lounges: primary cardmember plus up to two guests for $50 each (or complimentary after $75,000 in annual eligible spending).
  • Priority Pass: enrollment required; lounge-only access with up to two guests.
  • Delta Sky Clubs: accessible only when flying Delta on a same-day ticket; guest access costs $50 per visit.

Know the limits: Know the tradeoff: lounge access is the Platinum Card's signature benefit, but guest fees, capacity restrictions and Delta eligibility rules have evolved. Access is tied to same-day travel and can be denied for capacity reasons.

$3,500+

Annual statement credits

The Platinum Card's credit suite is the largest advertised dollar total among broadly held U.S. consumer cards.

  • Travel: $200 Airline Fee Credit (one airline choice required), $200 Uber Cash ($15/month + $20 December), $120 Uber One Credit, $189 CLEAR+, $600 Hotel Credit (FHR/The Hotel Collection), $219 CLEAR+.
  • Lifestyle: $400 Resy, $300 Digital Entertainment, $300 lululemon, $155 Walmart+, $200 Oura Ring, $300 Equinox.

Know the limits: Know the tradeoff: most credits have enrollment requirements, merchant restrictions, monthly or semi-annual cadences, and use-it-or-lose-it terms. The headline total is only as valuable as the credits you would naturally use.

Tier 2 · Strong, but available on some peers

Premium travel benefits with meaningful value and material conditions.

5X Flights and prepaid hotels

Five points per dollar on eligible airfare purchased directly from airlines and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel.

The 5X rate on direct airfare is competitive among premium cards. However, everyday spending earns only 1X, making the Platinum a poor daily driver compared to cards with 2X–4X on dining and groceries.

FHR Fine Hotels + Resorts

Access to a curated collection of luxury hotels with guaranteed 4pm checkout, daily breakfast for two, room upgrades when available, and a property-specific experience credit.

FHR rates may be higher than booking direct or through other channels. Hotel loyalty points and elite benefits may not apply on FHR bookings.

Gold Hotel and rental-car elite status

Complimentary Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status with enrollment. Avis Preferred Plus, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards and National Emerald Club Executive status.

Hilton Gold provides food-and-beverage credits and upgrades at select properties. Marriott Gold provides late checkout and enhanced internet. Neither provides guaranteed lounge access or suite upgrades.

Tier 3 · Expected premium-card support

Useful protections, credits and services that should not drive the decision alone.

Purchase protection 90 days

Eligible purchases covered for up to 90 days against accidental damage or theft, up to $10,000 per occurrence and $50,000 per calendar year.

Extended warranty +1 year

Extends eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of five years or less by up to one additional year. Caps and exclusions apply.

No foreign transaction fees Travel baseline

No issuer foreign-transaction fee on purchases made abroad. Amex acceptance outside the U.S. is generally lower than Visa or Mastercard.

No preset spending limit Purchasing power

Spending capacity adjusts based on usage patterns, payment history and credit record. Not a traditional revolving credit line; can affect credit utilization calculations.

Global Assist Hotline Coordination only

24/7 emergency assistance coordination is included; third-party service costs remain the cardholder's responsibility.

Secondary car rental coverage Guide controls

Secondary coverage on eligible rentals fills gaps after personal auto policy. Premium Car Rental Protection can be purchased for primary coverage at a per-rental fee.

Comparison method: Premium travel cards, including Chase Sapphire Reserve, Capital One Venture X, Citi Strata Elite, Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant and Hilton Honors Aspire; public positioning reviewed in July 2026. Tiering is editorial, and a public page's silence is not proof that a competing benefit does not exist.

Earning rates

Travel earns at 5X; everything else earns at 1X.

Rates shown are total points per dollar on eligible purchases. The Platinum is a travel-earning card, not an everyday spending card.

5X

Flights booked directly with airlines

Also 5X on flights booked through Amex Travel, up to 500,000 points per calendar year.

5X

Prepaid hotels through Amex Travel

Eligible prepaid hotel reservations on amextravel.com. Portal pricing, cancellation and loyalty treatment may differ from booking direct.

1X

All other purchases

One point per dollar on purchases not eligible for a higher rate. The Platinum is not designed for everyday spending; pairing it with an Amex Gold or other earning card is common.

Credit interaction: Credit interaction: purchases offset by statement credits still earn points at the applicable category rate. The $200 Airline Fee Credit applies to incidental fees at the selected airline—not airfare—and has separate terms. Amex Offers and targeted promotions have their own terms.

Unique & popular transfer partners

Same Amex network; most airlines transfer at 1:1.

Membership Rewards points transfer to participating airline and hotel programs. Partners without a shown ratio transfer at the standard 1:1.

Important exceptions

1:0.8

JetBlue transfer ratio

Most partners are 1:1; JetBlue, Hilton and a few hotels differ.
