At a glance
The card in three decisions.
Amex Gold Card (officially the Amex Gold Card) earns 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar on its two strongest categories—restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets—without an annual cap on dining. The card carries $424 in annual statement credits, but every credit except Resy is split into monthly or quarterly pieces, creating real breakage. The welcome offer is an "apply and find out" model where the 100,000-point maximum is not guaranteed.
The credit structure earns a 5/5 Coupon Book score because the credits are unusually valuable for a mid-tier card, though the merchant list and monthly cadence demand attention. The card earns a 4/5 Keeper Card score because dining and grocery spending can produce significant ongoing reward value even after the first year, provided the cardholder uses most of the credits without changing their behavior.
Best fit
High-spend households that dine out and buy groceries regularly
Especially relevant when the dining and Uber credits already match existing spending patterns and transferable points are valued over cash back.
Current timing
100K matches the tracked maximum—but it may not be the offer you get
Amex determines your specific offer when you apply, using criteria it does not publicly disclose.
Main watchout
Credits arrive monthly; the offer is not fixed
$424 in credits sounds appealing, but each piece has its own merchant list, cadence and enrollment requirement.
Current & historical offer
100K is the advertised maximum; your actual offer may differ.
We compare public points offers with public points offers. Amex's "apply and find out" model means the displayed 100K figure is a ceiling, not a guarantee.
Timing assessment
The 100K ceiling is historically strong—but it is not fixed.
100K is 40,000 points above the tracked 60K standard, a 66.7% increase. However, the "apply and find out" model means you may receive a lower offer during the application.
Why someone may still apply
A strong earning card can make sense even with an uncertain bonus.
Apply only if the $8,000 spend is ordinary planned spending over six months, the $325 fee makes sense after netting out credits you already use, and Amex's once-per-lifetime language does not rule you out.
Card benefits
4X dining and groceries lead; credits demand monthly attention.
The tiers are a Points Brief editorial assessment of decision importance and rarity among mid-tier travel-and-dining cards—not labels supplied by Amex.
Tier 1 · Rare differentiators
Benefits whose earning power or breadth can materially change the card decision.
Dining and U.S. supermarket earning
Two of the largest household spending categories earn at the same elevated rate, with no cap on restaurant spending worldwide.
- Restaurants: 4X worldwide, including takeout and eligible delivery services. No annual cap.
- U.S. supermarkets: 4X on the first $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X.
- Superstores, warehouse clubs and specialty-food stores may not code as supermarkets.
Know the limits: Know the cap: the supermarket 4X rate resets each January 1. Households that spend more than $25,000 per year on groceries should model the blended earning rate for spending above the cap.
Membership Rewards transfer partners
Amex maintains one of the broadest transferable-points ecosystems, spanning all three major airline alliances and multiple hotel programs.
- Most airline partners transfer at 1,000 Membership Rewards = 1,000 partner miles.
- Notable exceptions: JetBlue 1:0.8, Hilton 1:2, and select non-1:1 hotel ratios.
- Domestic U.S. airline transfers incur a $0.0006-per-point excise tax offset fee, capped at $99.
Know the limits: Know the tradeoff: breadth does not guarantee value. Transfer decisions should compare the partner award price in miles, the cash price of the ticket or stay, and any transfer fees or taxes before moving points.
Tier 2 · Strong, but available on some peers
Meaningful value with real structural constraints.
$424 Statement credits
$120 Uber Cash ($10/month), $120 Dining Credit ($10/month at select merchants), $100 Resy Credit (two $50 semi-annual credits) and $84 Dunkin' Credit ($7/month).
Uber Cash expires monthly. Dining and Dunkin' credits require enrollment and do not roll over. Resy is semi-annual. The Hotel Collection requires a 2+ night Amex Travel booking.
3X Flights booked directly with airlines
Three points per dollar on eligible airfare purchased directly from airlines or through Amex Travel.
Useful for travelers, but several mid-tier competitors also offer elevated airfare earning at a lower annual fee. Compare with CSP's 2X travel and Venture's 2X everywhere.
Secondary Car rental loss and damage insurance
Secondary coverage on eligible rentals—fills gaps after your personal auto policy rather than responding first.
This is a genuine distinction from Chase Sapphire Preferred, which advertises primary coverage. Renters who value primary coverage should note the difference.
Tier 3 · Expected card basics
Useful protections and services that should not drive the decision alone.
Purchase protection 90 days
Eligible purchases covered for up to 90 days against accidental damage or theft, up to $1,000 per occurrence, subject to exclusions.
Extended warranty +1 year
Extends eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of five years or less by up to one additional year. Caps and exclusions apply.
No foreign transaction fees Travel baseline
No issuer foreign-transaction fee on purchases made abroad. Amex acceptance outside the U.S. is generally lower than Visa or Mastercard.
Global Assist Hotline Coordination only
24/7 emergency assistance coordination is included; third-party service costs remain the cardholder's responsibility.
Baggage insurance plan Common carrier
Coverage for eligible checked and carry-on baggage on common-carrier travel; terms, exclusions and claim procedures apply.
Amex Offers and experiences Varies by account
Targeted statement credits, bonus points and presale access. Availability varies by account; not a guaranteed annual offset.
Comparison method: Mid-tier travel-and-dining cards, including Chase Sapphire Preferred, Capital One Savor, Citi Strata Premier and Wells Fargo Autograph Journey; public positioning reviewed in July 2026. Tiering is editorial, and a public page's silence is not proof that a competing benefit does not exist.
Earning rates
Restaurants and supermarkets earn at the same elevated rate.
Rates shown are total points per dollar on eligible purchases. Merchant coding, Amex's category definitions and the $25,000 supermarket cap control.
Prepaid hotels through Amex Travel
Eligible prepaid hotel reservations on amextravel.com. Portal pricing, cancellation and loyalty treatment may differ from booking direct.
Restaurants worldwide
Includes takeout and eligible delivery services. No annual spending cap.
U.S. supermarkets
On up to $25,000 per calendar year, then 1X. Superstores, warehouse clubs and specialty-food stores may not code as supermarkets.
Flights booked directly with airlines
Also 3X on flights booked through Amex Travel.
Prepaid car rentals through Amex Travel
Eligible prepaid rental car reservations on amextravel.com.
All other purchases
One point per dollar on purchases not eligible for another rate.
Credit interaction: Credit interaction: purchases offset by statement credits (Uber Cash, Dining, Dunkin', Resy) still earn points at the applicable category rate. The Hotel Collection credit applies separately from earning. Amex Offers and targeted promotions have separate terms.
Unique & popular transfer partners
Amex's network is broad; most airlines transfer at 1:1.
Membership Rewards points transfer to participating airline and hotel programs. Partners without a shown ratio transfer at the standard 1:1.
Important exceptions
1:0.8JetBlue transfer ratio
Most partners are 1:1; JetBlue, Hilton and a few hotels differ.
Seventeen of the eighteen airline partners transfer at the standard 1,000 Membership Rewards = 1,000 miles ratio. JetBlue transfers at 1:0.8. Among hotels, Hilton transfers at 1:2, Marriott at 1:1, and Choice at 1:1. Domestic U.S. airline transfers (e.g., Delta, JetBlue) incur a $0.0006-per-point excise tax offset fee, capped at $99.
