At a glance
The card in three decisions.
The Amex Hilton Honors card is a $0-annual-fee hotel co-branded card that earns elevated points on everyday spending—7X on Hilton stays, 5X on U.S. dining, U.S. groceries, and U.S. gas stations, and 3X on all other purchases. For a no-fee card, the earning structure is strong. Automatic Hilton Honors Silver status is included for as long as the card is open.
The card earns a 0/5 Coupon Book score because there are no statement credits, quarterly bonuses, or free-night certificates to manage. It earns a 4/5 Keeper Card score because the $0 annual fee, strong subset of everyday earning categories, and automatic Silver status make this a durable long-term hold with no carrying cost.
The Honors card is also the common downgrade target for the Surpass ($150) and Aspire ($550). When a cardholder no longer wants to pay an annual fee but wants to keep their Hilton points pool and Silver status, Amex typically allows product-changing down to this card. This makes it a useful long-term keeper even for cardholders who start higher in the Hilton family.
Best fit
People who want Hilton points and Silver status at no annual cost
If you stay at Hilton properties occasionally and want to earn Hilton points on everyday spending without paying an annual fee, this card has no competition.
Current timing
The 70K + Free Night Reward bundle is live—but ends January 13, 2027
The current offer pairs 70,000 points with a Free Night Reward after just $2,000 in 6 months. That bundle beats the old 80K points-only standard; the published end date makes waiting risky.
Main watchout
Hilton points are worth less than transferable currencies
At roughly 0.4–0.6 cents per point, 5X dining equals about 2–3% back. A 2% cash-back card may be simpler for everyday spending. The real value is pooling Hilton points toward award stays. As a general rule, never carry a balance on any rewards card.
Current & historical offer
The current 70K + Free Night Reward bundle beats the old 80K points-only standard.
We compare public points offers with public points offers. Referral, branch and targeted offers are outside this ladder.
Timing assessment
The free-night bundle is the best offer this card has carried—take it before January 13, 2027.
Points-only offers have ranged 70K–100K, but the Free Night Reward is worth more than 20,000+ points at mid-range properties. The current 70K + FNR bundle (after just $2,000 spend) is the strongest combination we have tracked on this card. Do not wait for a points-only increase that may not come.
Why someone may still apply
No-fee Hilton earning and Silver status have keeper value independent of the bonus.
The 7X Hilton earning rate, 5X everyday categories, and automatic Silver status are worth holding even without a headline bonus. If you have an upcoming Hilton stay and want to start earning, the standard offer is fine.
Card benefits
Silver status is the differentiator; everyday earning is solid but not a reason alone to hold the card.
The tiers are a Points Brief editorial assessment of decision importance and rarity among no-fee hotel cards—not labels supplied by Amex or Hilton.
Tier 1 · Rare differentiators
Benefits that set this card apart from other no-fee hotel cards.
Automatic Hilton Honors Silver status
Complimentary Silver status for as long as the card is open—no annual spend requirement to maintain it.
- 20% points bonus on eligible Hilton stays (versus base 10 points per dollar).
- Fifth night free on standard award stays of five or more consecutive nights.
- Space-available room upgrades begin at Gold status, not Silver.
Know the limits: Silver is the entry-level elite tier. The 20% points bonus is modest compared to the 80% bonus at Gold. But at $0 annual fee, having any elite status with Hilton is uncommon among no-fee hotel cards.
Extended warranty
Extends eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties by up to one additional year. Rare on a no-annual-fee card—most free cards omit purchase protections entirely.
Know the limits: Coverage limits and exclusions apply. Items must be purchased on the card. Not available in all states.
Tier 2 · Solid everyday earning
Benefits that add value but should not drive the decision alone.
7X Hilton Portfolio purchases
Earn 7X points on eligible purchases made directly with hotels and resorts within the Hilton Portfolio.
Hilton points are worth roughly 0.4–0.6 cents each. 7X translates to about 2.8–4.2% back on Hilton stays.
5X Dining, groceries and gas at 5X
Three of the largest household spending categories earn 5X Hilton Honors points—rare for a hotel co-branded card, especially at $0 annual fee.
Tier 3 · Expected card basics
Standard protections and perks.
No foreign transaction fees No FTF
No Amex foreign-transaction fee on purchases made abroad. Amex acceptance outside the U.S. is generally lower than Visa or Mastercard.
Purchase protection 90 days
Eligible purchases covered for up to 90 days against accidental damage or theft.
Car rental loss and damage insurance Secondary
Secondary coverage on eligible rentals. Terms, exclusions and vehicle restrictions apply.

Purchases at Hilton Portfolio hotels and resorts
Eligible purchases made directly with participating Hilton properties.
U.S. restaurants
Includes takeout and eligible delivery services. No annual cap.
U.S. supermarkets
Superstores, warehouse clubs and specialty-food stores may not code as supermarkets.
U.S. gas stations
At eligible U.S. gas station locations.
All other purchases
Three points per dollar on purchases not eligible for a higher rate.
Credit interaction: Point value context: Hilton Honors points are valued at roughly 0.4–0.6 cents each in most independent analyses. At 0.5 cents per point, 5X translates to roughly 2.5% back on dining, groceries and gas—competitive with cash-back cards in those categories while also building toward Hilton redemptions.
Hilton Honors program
The largest U.S. hotel footprint—with no-fee Silver status.
Hilton dominates domestic coverage with over 6,000 U.S. properties spanning budget to luxury. Points are hotel-loyalty points, not transferable Membership Rewards. They cannot be moved to airline partners or other hotel programs.
Key redemption feature
5thnight free on standard awards
Silver status qualifies cardholders for the fifth night free on standard award stays of five or more consecutive nights.
Standard room awards are priced dynamically based on demand—not a fixed chart—so the fifth-night savings depend on the nightly rate. Premium room awards, all-inclusive redemptions and certain high-demand properties are excluded. The benefit requires booking a single five-night stay.
