At a glance

A no-fee hotel card with solid everyday earning. The Select is better — this one costs nothing.

The Wells Fargo Choice Privileges card earns 5X points on stays at Choice Hotels properties and 3X on gas stations, grocery stores, home improvement stores, and phone plans. All other purchases earn 1X. There is no annual fee. The card includes automatic Gold Elite status, which adds a 10% bonus on points earned during qualifying stays.

The current welcome offer is 60,000 bonus points after $1,000 in spend within the first 3 months — an elevated limited-time offer above the standard 40,000-point level. This is the same bonus point total as the $95 Select card, but the earning rates and elite status are lower. If the Select is not worth $95 to you, the no-fee version still earns useful points on everyday categories with no cost to hold.

Best fit

No-fee hotel loyalists who want Choice points without an annual commitment

If you stay at Choice Hotels occasionally — not enough to justify $95 — the 5X earning and Gold Elite status at $0 is a better fit than paying for the Select and not using it enough.

Current timing

60,000 points is elevated — the standard offer is 40,000

The no-fee card normally offers 40,000 bonus points. At 60,000, the bonus is 50% larger with a modest $1,000 spend requirement. If this card fits, apply during the elevated window.

Main watchout

The Select earns double at Choice Hotels and gets 30,000 anniversary points

At 10X on stays and 30,000 bonus points every year, the $95 Select easily outearns the no-fee version for anyone who stays at Choice Hotels more than a few nights per year. Do the math before defaulting to the free card.

Current & historical offer

60,000 is an elevated limited-time offer — 50% above the standard 40,000.

We compare public offers with public offers. Referral, targeted, and mailer offers are outside this ladder.

Standard Offer 40,000 points
Standard Offer 40,000 bonus points after $1,000 spend. The most commonly available public level for the no-fee card.
Maximum Tracked Offer 60,000 points
Maximum Tracked Offer Green outline marks the current offer. 60,000 limited-time elevated bonus after $1,000 spend — the highest tracked public bonus for this card.

Timing assessment

60,000 is the elevated window — apply now if the card fits.

At $1,000 spend for 60,000 points, the earning-to-spend ratio is excellent. The standard 40,000 is still fine at $0 annual fee, but an extra 20,000 points for the same spend requirement is worth acting on.

Why someone may wait

If Choice Hotels is an occasional thing, any bonus is fine timing.

At $0 annual fee, there is no pressure to time the bonus perfectly. The card costs nothing to hold. If the elevated window closes, 40,000 points at $1,000 spend is still a reasonable offer on a card you can keep forever.

60,000 bonus · $0 annual fee

Card benefits

3X everyday earning and Gold status at $0 — what the Select gives you that this does not is 30,000 anniversary points and doubled earning.

The tiers compare the no-fee Choice Privileges against other $0 hotel co-brand cards. The comparison is fair against no-fee competitors — not against the $95 Select, which is in a different class.

Tier 1 · Useful at $0 — no other $0 hotel card matches these categories

Benefits that make the card worth opening.

5X

5X at Choice Hotels — better than most $0 hotel cards

The no-fee card earns 5X points on Choice Hotels stays. At 0.7 cents per point, that is roughly a 3.5% return. For comparison: the $0 IHG Traveler earns 3X at IHG, the $0 Marriott Bold earns 3X at Marriott. 5X is the highest no-fee earning rate among hotel co-brand cards.

  • Applies to eligible room rates booked directly with Choice Hotels.
  • Stacks with the Gold Elite 10% bonus on qualifying stays.
  • No annual fee means every point earned on stays is pure upside.
3X × 4

3X on gas, grocery, home improvement, and phone plans

Four everyday categories at 3X — unusual for any hotel card, let alone a no-fee one. Gas and grocery alone cover a large share of household spending. At 0.7 cents per point, 3X is roughly a 2.1% return — respectable for a $0 travel card.

  • Gas stations, grocery stores, home improvement stores, and phone plans.
  • No caps, no activation, no rotating categories.

Know the limits: The $95 Select earns 5X on these same categories. If your spending in these categories is significant, the extra 2X on the Select may justify the fee.

Tier 2 · Nice to have, but do not overvalue these

Benefits that are present but underwhelming.

Gold Automatic Gold Elite status — sounds better than it is

Cardmembers receive Choice Privileges Gold Elite status automatically. It adds a 10% bonus on points earned during qualifying stays. That is the main tangible benefit — Gold Elite does not include guaranteed late checkout, suite upgrades, or any meaningful on-property perks. It is a small earning boost with a name that sounds more impressive than the actual benefit.

At $0, getting any elite status at all is unusual — most $0 hotel cards offer none. But be realistic: Gold Elite's 10% point bonus on a $100 stay is 50 extra points worth about 35 cents. This is not a reason to choose the card. It is a minor bonus for a card you already have.

No 30K No anniversary points — the Select gets 30,000 points every year

The single biggest difference between the two cards. The Select deposits 30,000 points into your account each anniversary — worth roughly $180–$240. The no-fee card gives you nothing on your anniversary. If you stay at Choice Hotels even once a year, the Select typically comes out ahead.

Half earning Half the earning rate at Choice Hotels and on everyday categories

The Select earns 10X at Choice Hotels (vs 5X) and 5X on everyday categories (vs 3X). At $0, the no-fee rates are still good. But the Select doubles the earning where it counts.

Tier 3 · Expected basics

Standard features.

Points transfer to airlines — at mediocre ratios Transfers

Choice points transfer to a small set of airline partners, mostly at 5:2 or 5:1.

Points expire after 18 months of inactivity Warning

Choice Privileges points expire 18 months after your last qualifying activity.

Points can be pooled with household members Hotel baseline

Choice Privileges allows point transfers between members at the same address.

Earning rates

5X at Choice Hotels; 3X on four everyday categories; 1X everywhere else.

Points are earned per dollar on eligible purchases. Rates are lower than the Select but cost nothing to hold.

5X

Choice Hotels properties

Applies to eligible room rates booked directly with Choice Hotels. Covers Comfort, Quality, Clarion, Econo Lodge, Rodeway, Sleep Inn, MainStay, Cambria, and Ascend Collection properties.

3X

Gas stations

Most gas stations.

3X

Grocery stores

Most standalone grocery stores. Excludes superstores and warehouse clubs.

3X

Home improvement stores

Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware, and similar retailers.

3X

Phone plans

Monthly phone service charges from most major carriers.

1X

All other purchases

Every purchase not covered by a higher category earns 1X.

Select comparison: The $95 Select doubles these rates to 10X at Choice Hotels and 5X on everyday categories. The Select also deposits 30,000 points into your account each anniversary — worth roughly $180–$240. If you stay at Choice Hotels even 2–3 nights per year, the Select's higher earning and anniversary points typically justify the fee. The no-fee card is for people who want Choice points occasionally at zero cost.

How Choice compares to other hotel programs

Honest positioning.

  • Dense U.S. roadside coverage — more properties than Hyatt and IHG combined in many regions
  • Low point costs — 8,000–20,000 points for many budget/mid-scale properties
  • Weak international footprint — limited outside North America
  • No luxury redemptions — Cambria is upscale, not luxury
  • Airline transfers exist but are poor value — 5:2 or 5:1 ratios
