Closest alternatives

At a glance

The card in three decisions.

The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card occupies a sweet spot in the hotel co-branded card market. It earns well across everyday categories—6X on U.S. dining and groceries—rather than only on Hilton stays. The $200 Hilton credit ($50 per quarter) and a Free Night Reward after $15,000 in calendar-year spending push the value beyond the annual fee for regular Hilton guests.

The card earns a 3/5 Coupon Book score because the quarterly credit requires direct Hilton spending each quarter and the Free Night Reward requires a meaningful spend threshold. It earns a 4/5 Keeper Card score because automatic Hilton Gold status—with its food-and-beverage credits and upgrades at select properties—provides durable ongoing value even without the welcome offer.

Best fit

Regular Hilton guests who want status and strong everyday earning

Especially relevant when Hilton Gold status, the $50 quarterly credit and 6X on dining and groceries align with existing spending.

Current timing

130K is a strong elevated offer—but trails the 165K maximum

Amex publishes July 29, 2026 as the expiration, making this more urgent than most Amex offers that lack a public deadline.

Main watchout

A published end date means the clock is running

The $0 first-year annual fee is introductory, and the $150 ongoing fee must be justified with Hilton stays and quarterly credit use beyond year one.

Current & historical offer

130K is strong, but trails the 165K maximum and free-night bundle.

We compare public points offers with public points offers. The 130K + Free Night Reward offer is not directly comparable to a points-only offer, so it is listed as a separate row rather than a direct numeric comparison.

Standard offer 80,000 points
Baseline Frequently observed public level. Often paired with a comparable spend requirement.
Elevated offer 100,000 points
Elevated Appears periodically. Independent tracking records this as a common elevated tier.
Recent elevated offer 130,000 points
Current offer · exact match Green outline marks the current public points-only offer. A strong level, but two historically stronger offers exist.
Tracked maximum points 165,000 points
Highest points-only offer Independent tracking records 165K as the product's points-only peak. The current 130K offer is 35,000 points below this level.
Historical best w/ free night 130K + Free Night Reward
Best overall value Many people consider this the strongest Surpass offer to date, as the Free Night Reward can be worth $400–$800+ at premium properties.

Timing assessment

130K plus the $150 first-year fee waiver closes much of the gap with the 165K maximum.

At a rough 0.5-cent-per-point valuation, 35,000 Hilton points are worth about $175—close to the $150 introductory fee waiver included in the current offer. Factoring in the waived fee, the current offer lands within striking distance of the 165K peak for new cardholders who planned to pay the annual fee anyway. The published July 29 deadline adds urgency.

Why someone may still wait

A high offer does not guarantee the card is right for your spending.

Apply only if the $3,000 spend is ordinary planned spending over six months, you expect to stay at Hilton properties regularly, and the $150 ongoing fee makes sense after the introductory year.

Card benefits

Hilton Gold status leads; everyday earning supports it.

The tiers are a Points Brief editorial assessment of decision importance and rarity among mid-tier hotel co-branded cards—not labels supplied by Amex.

Tier 1 · Rare differentiators

Benefits whose scope or daily earning impact can materially change the card decision.

Gold

Automatic Hilton Honors Gold status

Complimentary Gold status for as long as the card is open—no annual spend requirement to maintain it.

  • 80% points bonus on eligible Hilton stays (versus 20% for base members).
  • Daily food-and-beverage credit at most brands, or continental breakfast at select properties.
  • Space-available room upgrades at select brands and properties.
  • Fifth night free on standard award stays of five or more consecutive nights.

Know the limits: Know the limits: Gold upgrades are at the hotel's discretion and availability. Food-and-beverage credits and breakfast offerings vary by brand and region. This is not lounge access or guaranteed suite upgrades—those require Diamond status.

6X

Dining and grocery earning

Two of the largest household spending categories earn at the same elevated rate—a rarity among hotel co-branded cards.

  • U.S. restaurants: 6X including takeout and delivery. No annual cap.
  • U.S. supermarkets: 6X. Superstores, warehouse clubs and specialty-food stores may not code as supermarkets.
  • Most competing hotel cards limit elevated earning to travel or hotel purchases only.

Know the limits: Know the tradeoff: Hilton points are worth less per point than transferable currencies or cash back. A 6X earning rate on a currency worth roughly 0.4–0.6 cents per point is roughly equivalent to 2.4–3.6% back—solid for a hotel card, not groundbreaking for a general spending card.

Tier 2 · Strong, with real structural constraints

Benefits that add value but require specific spending or travel patterns.

$200 Quarterly Hilton credit

Up to $50 in statement credits each quarter on eligible purchases made directly with hotels and resorts in the Hilton Portfolio.

Credits are quarterly—not annual—and require direct Hilton spending each quarter. Unused quarterly credits do not roll over. The full $200 requires Hilton charges distributed across all four calendar quarters.

Free Night Reward after $15,000 spend

Earn a Free Night Reward after $15,000 in eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year.

The reward can be used at most Hilton properties for a standard room. Blackout dates may apply at certain high-demand resorts. The $15,000 threshold resets each January 1.

12X On Hilton Portfolio purchases

Eligible purchases made directly with hotels and resorts within the Hilton Portfolio earn twelve points per dollar.

Combined with Gold status's 80% bonus on base points, the effective return can approach 34X total on paid Hilton stays. Value depends on the redemption rate of Hilton points.

Tier 3 · Expected card support

Useful protections and perks that should not drive the decision alone.

Purchase protection 90 days

Eligible purchases covered for up to 90 days against accidental damage or theft, subject to exclusions and limits.

Extended warranty +1 year

Extends eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of five years or less by up to one additional year.

No foreign transaction fees Travel baseline

No issuer foreign-transaction fee on purchases made abroad. Amex acceptance outside the U.S. is generally lower than Visa or Mastercard.

Car rental loss and damage insurance Secondary

Secondary coverage on eligible rentals fills gaps after personal auto policy. Terms, exclusions and vehicle restrictions apply.

Baggage insurance plan Common carrier

Coverage for eligible checked and carry-on baggage on common-carrier travel; terms, exclusions and claim procedures apply.

National Emerald Club Executive Auto status

Complimentary executive-tier status with National Car Rental, including access to the Executive selection area and guaranteed upgrades. Enrollment required.

Comparison method: Mid-tier hotel co-branded cards, including Marriott Bonvoy Bevy, IHG Premier, World of Hyatt and Marriott Bonvoy Boundless; public positioning reviewed in July 2026. Tiering is editorial, and a public page's silence is not proof that a competing benefit does not exist.

Earning rates

Hilton stays earn the most; everyday categories earn more than most hotel cards.

Rates shown are total points per dollar on eligible purchases. Merchant coding and Amex's category definitions control. Hilton Gold status adds an 80% bonus on base points earned from Hilton stays (separate from the card's earning rate).

12X

Purchases at Hilton Portfolio hotels and resorts

Eligible purchases made directly with participating Hilton properties. Combined with the 10X base points from Hilton for paid stays and the 80% Gold bonus, effective return can reach ~34X total.

6X

U.S. restaurants

Includes takeout and eligible delivery services. No annual cap.

6X

U.S. supermarkets

Superstores, warehouse clubs and specialty-food stores may not code as supermarkets.

4X

U.S. online retail purchases

Eligible online purchases at U.S. retail merchants. Terms and merchant exclusions apply.

3X

All other purchases

Three points per dollar on purchases not eligible for another rate—a higher floor than the 1X–2X typical of most co-branded cards.

Credit interaction: Point value context: Hilton Honors points are valued at roughly 0.4–0.6 cents each in most independent analyses. At 0.5 cents per point, 6X translates to roughly 3% back on dining and groceries—competitive with cash-back cards in those categories while also building toward Hilton redemptions.

Hilton Honors program

The largest U.S. hotel footprint—weaker abroad.

Hilton dominates domestic coverage with over 6,000 U.S. properties spanning budget to luxury, but thins out considerably across much of Europe, Asia and South America. Points are hotel-loyalty points, not transferable Membership Rewards. They cannot be moved to airline partners or other hotel programs.

Key redemption feature

5th

night free on standard awards

Cardholders with Surpass (and its automatic Gold status) qualify for the fifth night free on standard award stays of five or more consecutive nights.

Standard room awards are priced dynamically based on demand—not a fixed chart—so the fifth-night savings depend on the nightly rate. Premium room awards, all-inclusive redemptions and certain high-demand properties are excluded. The benefit requires booking a single five-night stay; it does not apply across split reservations. Points-plus-cash bookings do not qualify.
