Closest alternatives
At a glance
The card in three decisions.
Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant is the premium Marriott card from Amex. At $650, it competes directly with the Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve—but for Marriott loyalists, the value proposition is clearer: automatic Platinum Elite status, a $300 annual dining credit ($25/month), and an annual Free Night Award worth up to 85,000 points. Those three benefits alone can justify the fee if you stay at Marriotts regularly and dine out at least once a month.
The earning rates are solid but not best-in-class: 6X at Marriott hotels, 3X on restaurants and flights booked directly, and 2X everywhere else. The real draw is the status and the free night. If you would otherwise chase Platinum status through 50 actual nights, this card saves you that effort—and the free night alone can be worth more than the annual fee at top-tier properties.
Best fit
Frequent Marriott guests who value Platinum status and a free night
If you stay 25+ nights a year at Marriotts and want automatic Platinum, free breakfast and lounge access without grinding 50 nights.
Current timing
150K is strong but 200K has appeared before
The current split offer (100K + 50K) for $8K total spend is competitive. A 200K no-lifetime-language offer appeared in March 2026.
Main watchout
$650 fee requires you to use the credits and free night
The $25/month dining credit requires monthly attention. The free night caps at 85K points. If you skip either, the math gets harder.
Current & historical offer
150K is elevated, but 200K has been the tracked maximum.
We compare public points offers with public points offers. Referral, branch and targeted offers are outside this ladder. The Brilliant typically uses a tiered spend structure.
Timing assessment
150K is elevated but 50K below the 200K tracked maximum.
The current offer is strong—$8K total spend for up to 150K points. But the 200K March 2026 offer with no lifetime language suggests higher windows can return. If your spend timing is flexible, waiting might pay off.
Why someone may still apply now
Platinum status and the free night start delivering value immediately.
If you have Marriott stays planned and $8K in ordinary spend, the status benefits and annual free night are worth more than waiting for an extra 50K points—especially if the no-lifetime-language window does not repeat.
Card benefits
Platinum status and the free night carry the $650 fee.
The tiers are a Points Brief editorial assessment of decision importance and rarity among comparable premium hotel cards—not labels supplied by American Express or Marriott.
Tier 1 · Rare differentiators
Benefits that set the Brilliant apart from other Marriott cards and most premium travel cards.
Automatic Marriott Platinum Elite status
Complimentary Platinum Elite status as long as the card is open. This is the status tier where Marriott elite benefits get real: free breakfast, lounge access, 4 p.m. late checkout and room upgrades including suites when available.
- 50% bonus points on eligible hotel purchases at participating Marriott properties.
- Enhanced room upgrades including suites, subject to availability at check-in.
- 4 p.m. late checkout at all hotels, except resorts and convention hotels.
- Welcome gift of points, breakfast or amenity at check-in.
Know the limits: Upgrades are at the hotel’s discretion and not guaranteed. Lounge access excludes Ritz-Carlton Club level unless you have Ritz-Carlton status separately. Resort fees still apply on award stays unless you use points at properties that waive them.
Annual Free Night Award
Every year after your card renewal month, receive a Free Night Award redeemable for one night at or under 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. This alone can exceed the $650 annual fee at top-tier properties.
- Award posts after each card renewal month. It is not available in the first year.
- Can be topped up with up to 15,000 additional points from your account for higher-category properties.
- Must be used within one year of issuance. Certain hotels have resort fees.
Know the limits: The 85K cap covers most standard Marriott properties but excludes peak pricing at top-tier hotels like The Ritz-Carlton Maldives or St. Regis Bora Bora during high season. The top-up privilege helps but does not eliminate the ceiling.
Tier 2 · Strong, but available on some peers
Meaningful value with visible restrictions or available on competing cards.
$300 Brilliant Dining Credit
Up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year for eligible restaurant purchases worldwide—applied as up to $25 per monthly billing period.
Unused monthly credits do not roll over. Requires dining out at least once per month to capture the full $300. Any restaurant worldwide qualifies, making this more flexible than chain-specific credits.
25 Elite Night Credits
Receive 25 Elite Night Credits each calendar year toward the next level of Marriott Bonvoy Elite status—10 more than the Bevy.
Combined with Platinum status from the card, this pushes you toward Titanium (75 nights). Pair with a Marriott business card for 40 credits from cards alone.
Choice Brilliant Earned Choice Award
After spending $60,000 on eligible purchases in a calendar year, select a Brilliant Earned Choice Award benefit. Another 85K Free Night Certificate is probably the best value for most people.
This is a $5,000/month average spend threshold—few should put that much on a Marriott card when 2X everywhere is the base rate. The earn rate on $60K of general spend is only 120K Bonvoy points (roughly $840–$960), well below what a 2% cash-back card or 2X transferable-points card would return.
Tier 3 · Expected card basics

No foreign transaction fees Travel baseline
No issuer foreign-transaction fee on purchases made abroad. Standard among premium travel and hotel cards.

Comparison method: Premium hotel co-branded cards including Chase Ritz-Carlton ($450), Amex Hilton Aspire ($550) and Amex Marriott Bevy ($250); official public pages reviewed in July 2026. A public page’s silence is not proof that a competing benefit does not exist.
Earning rates
3X on restaurants and flights gives the card everyday utility.
Rates shown are total Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on eligible purchases. Merchant coding and Amex’s current terms control. Points earned from Marriott loyalty status stack on top of card earning for hotel stays.
Marriott Bonvoy hotels
At participating Marriott properties when booked directly. Stacks with base Bonvoy points (10X) and the Platinum 50% bonus.
Restaurants worldwide
Includes takeout and delivery. The $25 monthly dining credit stacks on top of this earning.
Flights booked directly with airlines
Must book directly—third-party and travel agency bookings do not qualify.
All other eligible purchases
Two points per dollar on purchases not eligible for a higher rate.
Value context: Marriott Bonvoy points are estimated at roughly 0.7–0.8 cents each toward hotel stays, though premium redemptions can exceed 1.0 cent per point. Dining credits are applied as statement credits and do not earn points on the credited portion. Marriott points can be transferred to airline partners, but the ratios are generally weaker than hotel redemptions.
Marriott Bonvoy program
The broadest global footprint among major hotel chains.
Marriott Bonvoy points are hotel-loyalty points rather than flexible bank points. They can be redeemed for free nights at 30+ brands across 8,500+ properties worldwide. Airline transfers are possible, but often at weaker value. Redemption value varies by property, date and room type under Marriott’s dynamic pricing.
