At a glance
The card in three decisions.
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select is the entry-level American Airlines card with a $0 introductory first-year fee. It earns 2X miles on American Airlines purchases, restaurants and gas stations—a practical earning mix for travelers. The key benefits are a free first checked bag on domestic AA flights, preferred boarding (Group 5), and no foreign transaction fees.
There are no statement credits or coupon-book offsets. The value is purely in the AA perks: if you fly American regularly and check bags, the bag fee savings and priority boarding justify the $99 ongoing fee. The 80K limited-time offer with $0 first-year fee makes this a low-risk way to try an AA card. But if you do not fly American, this card has little to offer—the earning rates are modest and the miles are locked to AAdvantage.
Best fit
American Airlines flyers who want free checked bags and priority boarding
If you fly AA at least a few times a year and check bags, the $99 fee is easily covered by bag savings alone.
Current timing
80K is an elevated offer—double the standard 40K
The $0 first-year fee removes the upfront cost. A low-risk way to collect a large AAdvantage bonus.
Main watchout
No credits and limited value if you do not fly American
No statement credits, no travel protections. AAdvantage miles are locked to AA and partners. The CSP at $95 is a more flexible alternative.
Current & historical offer
80K is elevated; 100K has been the tracked maximum.
We compare public points offers with public points offers. Referral, branch and targeted offers are outside this ladder.
Timing assessment
80K with $0 first-year fee is a strong offer—worth applying now.
Double the standard 40K with no upfront annual fee makes this an easy bonus to collect. If you fly American even occasionally, the points are useful.
Why someone may wait
100K has appeared before and could return.
The 100K maximum has appeared in past promotions with the same $0 first-year fee structure. If you can wait and history repeats, you may capture 20K more miles.
Card benefits
Free checked bag and preferred boarding are the headliners.
The tiers are a Points Brief editorial assessment of decision importance and rarity among entry-level airline cards—not labels supplied by Citi or American Airlines.
Tier 1 · Rare differentiators
Benefits that set this card apart from other entry-level airline cards.
First checked bag free on domestic AA flights
Cardholder and up to 4 companions on the same reservation receive their first checked bag free on domestic American Airlines flights. Savings: $35 per bag each way.
- Applies to domestic American Airlines operated flights.
- Up to 4 companions on the same reservation.
- Must include AAdvantage number in the reservation.
Know the limits: Know the limits: does not apply to international flights or partner-operated flights. One round-trip with a checked bag saves $70—most of the $99 fee. A second trip puts you ahead.
Preferred boarding
Board in Group 5 on American Airlines flights—ahead of general boarding groups. Earlier overhead bin access before the bins fill up.
- Applies to American Airlines operated flights.
- Group 5 boards after First, Business, Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, Platinum, and Gold.
- Must include AAdvantage number in the reservation.
Know the limits: Know the limits: Group 5 is not Sky Priority-level boarding. On busy flights, overhead bins may still be competitive. But you board before the majority of Main Cabin passengers.
Tier 2 · Useful, but limited
Benefits that add incremental value.
25% Inflight savings on American Airlines
25% back as a statement credit on inflight food and beverage purchases on American Airlines operated flights.
Useful if you buy meals or drinks onboard. The savings are modest but add up for frequent flyers.
2X Gas stations and restaurants
2X AAdvantage miles on gas station and restaurant purchases. Two of the most common spending categories for travelers.
This is one of the few airline cards that earns bonus miles on gas. Combined with 2X on AA purchases, this covers three key travel spending categories.
No FTF No foreign transaction fees
No Citi foreign-transaction fee on purchases made abroad.
Standard among airline co-branded cards but not universal at this fee level.
Tier 3 · Expected card basics
Standard protections and program perks.
AAdvantage miles do not expire Program baseline

All other eligible purchases
One mile per dollar on purchases not eligible for a higher rate.
Credit interaction: Value context: AAdvantage miles are estimated at ~1.4–1.6 cents each for domestic redemptions. The 2X categories earn roughly 2.8–3.2% back—strong for an airline card. Miles are locked to AAdvantage and cannot be transferred to other programs.
AAdvantage program
One of the largest U.S. loyalty programs with a broad partner network.
AAdvantage miles are airline-specific—not transferable from other programs and not convertible to other airlines. They can be redeemed for American Airlines operated flights and oneworld alliance partner awards. Miles do not expire with qualifying activity every 24 months. AAdvantage uses dynamic award pricing with some saver-level availability.
Key benefit
1:1mile transfer from Citi
AAdvantage miles earned on this card are standard AAdvantage miles.
They pool with miles earned from flying American Airlines, other AA cards, and AAdvantage shopping and dining portals. Citi ThankYou Points do not transfer to AAdvantage—this card earns AAdvantage miles directly. Redemption value is highest for domestic AA flights at 1.4–1.6 cents per mile. Partner awards on oneworld carriers like Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific can offer even higher value on premium-cabin redemptions. Citi AA family rules may affect your ability to earn welcome bonuses across multiple AA cards.
